Why We Get Lightening

A myth submitted to the site by Martha Woods

Sparkleton, England

Once there was an extremely powerful heroine. She could even do magic! Draped over her shoulder, was a black cloak. Underneath it, she wore a long dress, the colour of the night sky. This woman had bright lime-coloured, cat-like eyes, which glowed as bright as the stars. Her hair was crazy, wild, and red. She had a secret name. Now if you’re interested, this secret name was Lightening.

She lived in the hollow of an old oak tree, where she kept; cushions, books, a leopard skin, and that was all, really. Beside the tree, was a small fire, on which Lightening cooked fish from the stream, and edible toadstools. Occasionally, she found crisp, juicy apples, and sweet, ripe blackberries. These were a real treat for Lightening.

Beside the forest, was a village, where a rainbow of houses were placed.

However, on the other side of the forest, was a huge mountain, stretching high above the clouds, and at the bottom of the mountain, was…

… Black Rock, the rock of DEATH! If you stepped any closer than a mile away from Black Rock, in less than one second, you’d be turned to stone for the rest of your life.

Just over a mile away from Black Rock, lived the Darkbird, bird of pure badness. Everyone hated it, specially the Starbird, bird of pure goodness.

One morning, all was peaceful in the village, the forest and the mountain. Lightening was cooking blackberries for breakfast, when she spotted…
…the Darkbird, carrying what looked like two children. Oh no! she thought, I must go and help. So she tried.

However, this was extremely difficult. First, she had to cross a gushing river full of unfamiliar creatures. She called for help. Then she heard a tinkle. It was the Starbird! It picked her up, and carried her over the river.

Her second challenge, was to climb the mountain. It was steeper than she’d first imagined. One whole day took her only one tenth up the mountain. The whole climb took ten days, which meant sleeping on tough rock, but it was worth it.

When Lightening was at the top, she gazed. She was surrounded by ice. She took a step. Petrified, she slipped over. She could no longer move her right leg. It was badly broken. She saw the Darkbird swoop down and drop the children.
Eventually, the Starbird picked Lightening up, and carried her three miles above Black Rock. She knew what to do.

She used her magical power to make a boulder appear. Lightening flung it at Black Rock. There was a loud bang, and a minute silence. She’d done it! She’d smashed Black Rock!

The pieces turned to gold coins. Lightening collected the gold coins, and leapt up onto the back of the Starbird, and as for the children, they hopped on to.

After the villagers heard the news, they made her queen of the world, and sometimes, you can still see her, flashing in the sky.
