How Snakes Got Their Venom

A myth submitted to the site by Yechiel

A Forest

A long time ago, a snake lived in a forest. One day, while the snake was slithering, he found a picnic set up. The food looked so good, that the snake decided to take the food home. There was milk, berries, bananas, apples, cheese, and much more. When he got home, he told his wife what he had found. She screamed at him and told him that he would forget about the food, and the food would smell up the house. He promised her that he wouldn’t forget.

Many months passed, and the snake forgot about the food. Now, his family is in rough financial times. They couldn’t even afford food. Then, the snake remembered the food that he stole from the picnic. He went up to his attic, and got the food. By now, the berries, bananas, and apples were all rotten. Also, the milk and cheese were spoiled. But, the snake was so hungry that he didn’t care how bad the food would taste. So, he decided to make a meal out of the rotten and spoiled food.

When he ate the food, it tasted like poison. It made him and his wife very sick. The sickness was also very contagious. Whenever they would bite someone, that person would become very sick. Unfortunately, the sickness never went away. Now, all of their descendants have this sickness that is now referred to as “venom”.
