One hot ole day in the desert, Doc Boomer, the dog, and Sister Perry, the pony, were looking for water. Just as they thought they had seen their last day, they spotted a lizard running across the desert sand. Nothing unusual, except for the fact that he wasn’t dried up like all the other animals. So Perry and Boomer went to investigate, and they followed him to his house.

When they looked in through the window they were surprised at what they saw. When they saw water, and lots of it, they thought they must already be dead. They waited for the lizard to leave, then they went in and took the water. They knew that they would get in lots of trouble if the lizard noticed it was gone, so they put cactus juice, which was clear but tasted so bad not even the coyotes would drink it, in the empty jars. Their plan usually would have worked, because they knew that lizard drank plenty of water at the his secret stream and stored the jars of water he got. But on this particular day, lizard was extremely thirsty that he drank a jar of the stored water and it tasted terrible, not like the water he got from his secret stream. He found out someone was stealing his delicious water, so he pretended to get some more water, but hid behind a tree.

When Doc Boomer and Sister Perry went in, he locked the door, they had no way out. They thought that was just fine but they didn’t know that Lizard had taken all the fresh water, so when they realized it, they knew they had to get out of there, and fast, it was starting to heat up. At this time, ponies and dogs had very long hair. Since it was so hot, they cut their hair very short, cause they thought they would be in there for a long time.

When lizard opened the door, he thought he caught the wrong animals and let them out, because he had never seen these creatures before and he feared for his life. That is why most dogs and horses have short hair and lizards are afraid of them.
