The Little Squirrel & The Swallow

A myth submitted to the site by Charlotte

Hampshire, Countryside, England

There was once a Squirrel and a Swallow. One day the Swallow challenged the Squirrel, he said "Ah, little Squirrel. I challenge you to see who can fly the highest."
The Squirrel thought for a moment, then she said, "Why dear, Swallow. I accept your challenge," and with that she scurried back to her home in the old oak tree. All night little Squirrel thought what to do. "Squirrel's can not fly....unless....." Little Squirrel had an idea.

The morning came quite quickly, and lots of little animals gathered round to watch. The Squirrel and the Swallow were sitting on a branch. Old Tortoise signaled them to get ready then he started counting down....."3.....2.....1.....GO!" The Swallow took off into the air, without looking down. When the Swallow did look down, he saw little Squirrel was not there. He said to himself, "Haha, I see the Squirrel has given up, but I shall fly as high as I can go to prove I am best!" What the Swallow did not know, was that the Squirrel jumped onto his back, and was so light that there was no extra weight. So when Swallow flew as high as he could go, little Squirrel jumped up as high as she could and cried, "Haha! It is I that can fly higher than you!"

It is now the end of this little tale, and it goes to show, that you can do anything if you put your mind to it!
