The Mermaid of Yarmouth

A myth submitted to the site by Hannah Costello

Yarmouth,Norfolk., England

One night, a boy aged 9 called James Lanson, who lived by the sea at Yarmouth, found a dagger lying on a rock at the beach. Suddenly, a beautiful face arose from the waters. James couldn’t believe his eyes. A real live mermaid! Suddenly, a man appeared. He told him,
“Kill this maiden and you will live a rich life.” James thought. Should he? Of course he should!

Then, he took the dagger and quickly stabbed the girl. She gave a shriek as she was stabbed, then shrank into dust.
“Sorry, I forgot to tell you that the curse says that you’ll be rich in misfortune.”

What curse? He hadn't told him about any curse! Oh no!
From then on everything seemed to go wrong for poor James. He lived in misery. But one question remains. Who was that man?
