Long, long ago, there was a time when puffer fish did not have spikes.

When the baby puffer fish was born he had no spikes . He looked like a football but with eyes and a mouth. "I want spikes mum" said the baby puffer fish . The mum said "Visit the shark, but you might get eaten".

So the puffer fish set off to visit the shark in the cave. Then he found the cave, so then he snuck up behind the shark while he was asleep. SNAP! The shark woke up, but the puffer fish got the tooth and then he ate it. Then he set off home with his new spikes and everyone wanted some.

So that is how the puffer fish got their spikes.
