How Crab got a Hard Back

A myth submitted to the site by Amilia

Now in the spring of time, when everything was new, there was an old witch-woman and nobody knew her name. She called herself Old Woman Crim, and although she was very rich she was very mean. She had no children of her own, but she kept animals as her children: Duck, Goat, Crab and Peacock. She use girls to clean and cook for her. She told them if the knew her name they would be rewarded with half of her money. Girls came they cleaned but at the end of the week they had to know her name but they didn't.

One day Anansi heard the news, so he dress up like a girl and went to Old Woman Crim's house. That day she sent out crab and anansi went behind him. Crab went to the river, anansi ask crab to tell him the Old womans name crab told anansi, he went back to the house and gave her the name it was cantinny at the end of the week. Anansi got the money from the old lady she then asked the animals she said" who told that girl my name everyone except crab held up their head" the old lady went to crab and said" did you tell that girl my name" crab shock his head he then tried to run away but the old lady threw the bowl and it fell on crab's back. That how crab got a hard back.
