How the mermaid got her tale.

A myth submitted to the site by Alice Gillard

Long, long ago there was a beautiful girl that lived in Scotland and her name was Lilly and she was very sensible.

But a witch was always bothering her. The witch got so mad that she said, "When you are sixteen, you will turn into a mermaid and live in the sea."

So Lilly tried to stay out of the witch's way. If she saw the witch, she would go back to her house.

One day, she saw the witch again. The witch chased her back to her house. The witch said, "Make her legs turn into a tail."

Suddenly she found herself on the bedroom floor, flopping around like a giant fish. The witch grabbed her by the tail and dragged her down the stairs, out of the front door, across the garden, to the pier and dropped her into the sea. "Don't come back Fishtail, or I'll make you into fish pie." So Lilly the mermaid swam off and was never seen again.
